My dog suddenly has 'eye boogers'. Could it be allergies?

I have a 12 year old Lab Retriever, and the last few days I've had to clean out her eyes about twice a day because she has had an excessive buildup of 'eye goop', for lack of a better term. Could this be due to the high pollen count in the air, aka allergies, or should I be concerned? She doesn't appear to be in any pain, nor does it seem to bother her. I have no problem taking her to the vet. I just thought I would ask here first because I know I have received excellent answers to my questions in the past.
