Should i get a Male or female dog?

So after long consideration and help from people, my family and i are still deciding on whether to get a german shepherd or golden retriever. But we're more towards a shepherd. Now, we need to decide on whether to get a male or female. Generally, i would prefer male's because they are more affectionate and more loyal. I heard that female dogs are temperamental and also, they get their periods. Which would be quite messy. But the good thing about female's is that when they pee or poo, they are less messy. Will male's pee on the wall? Thanks.
